What is it? EA is a high-level business and technology model of the enterprise along with transition plans to evolve the enterprise.
When and why do I need it? EA is implemented whenever operational strategy is considered. EA is used in order to standardize the information technology platform and reduce costs.
Where do I apply it? EA is executed at the executive suite level.
Who in my industry uses it? EA is used by large corporations and all federal agencies.
How we do it!
Semantisys implements an operational enterprise architecture which leverages semantic technologies to replace EA view documentation with executable EA implementation code.
Additional Information
As with architecture for buildings, Information Technology (IT) architecture refers to the high level, overall organization of the system. In the case of EA, the system under consideration is an entire organization. EA is composed of 3 steps: >
1) Determine the As-Is view of the architecture. The As-Is view documents the existing major components at the enterprise level and how these components interact;
2) The second step is to determine the To-Be view which shows the vision and objectives that the enterprise business leaders have for the future state of the IT architecture.
3) Finally, a complete EA program develops a transition plan showing how the enterprise will transition from the As-Is state to the To-Be state.
Developing an Enterprise Architecture is a type of high level design. Care must be taken to ensure that the design effort produces artifacts that are not only useful documentation, but plans that are implementable. In recent years, the focus within the EA community has been on EA Segments. By focusing on a segment of an enterprise, the EA effort is concentrated on an actionable scope of work. Under our approach to EA we continually review the scope and segment of the work to ensure that the resulting work product is implementable. We continually review with management, all results and obstacles to ensure that the implementable work products meet expectations. A properly executed EA program has been shown to reduce cost and improve the capability for the enterprise to adapt to change.
